Knowing the Condition of the Flock
Proverbs 27:23
“Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds.” (Proverbs 27:23)
August in Goodhue County means fair time, August 11-16. For many families, the county fair is a celebration of hard work, faithful stewardship, and community. Months before the gates open, animals are fed, groomed, exercised, and cared for every single day. A good poultry or livestock owner knows that healthy animals don't happen by accident. They require attention, patience, and daily care. The fair simply reveals the faithful work that has already been taking place.
King Solomon understood that truth when he wrote, “Be sure you know the condition of your flocks.” In his day, sheep and cattle were a family's livelihood. A wise shepherd did not assume everything was fine. He watched carefully, noticed when one wandered, cared for the weak, and protected the flock from danger.
While most of us no longer tend sheep or cattle for a living, God has entrusted each of us with responsibilities. Parents are called to know the condition of their children. Husbands and wives are to care for one another. Employers and employees are to faithfully fulfill their callings. As Christians, we are also part of the flock of the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. He knows each of His sheep by name. He sees our struggles, seeks us when we wander, binds up our wounds, and laid down His life on the cross so that we might belong to Him forever.
As you enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the Goodhue County Fair this August, thank God for the farmers, and young exhibitors whose faithful care reminds us of this biblical truth. Then remember an even greater Shepherd who watches over you every day with perfect love. Because Jesus knows the condition of His flock, we can rest securely in His care today and forever.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, thank You for watching over us with unfailing love. Help us to be faithful stewards of the people and responsibilities You have entrusted to us. As we enjoy the blessings of another county fair, remind us that we belong to You, and keep us always close to Your gracious care.
1 I am Jesus' little lamb,
Ever glad at heart I am;
For my Shepherd gently guides me,
Knows my need and well provides me,
Loves me ev'ry day the same,
Even calls me by my name.
2 Day by day, at home, away,
Jesus is my staff and stay.
When I hunger, Jesus feeds me,
Into pleasant pastures leads me;
When I thirst, He bids me go
Where the quiet waters flow.
3 Who so happy as I am,
Even now the Shepherd's lamb?
And when my short life is ended,
By His angel host attended,
He shall fold me to His breast,
There within His arms to rest.
