A Minnesotan:

The Christmas Bat

Posted

I absolutely love Christmas decorations and the whole process of decorating for Christmas. Now that I am grown I have my own home to decorate and my own decorations. But there are times when I think back to how my parents house was decorated for Christmas when I was a little kid.

Back when I was a child in the early 2000s a large number of my mom’s best friend’s, who would always spend at least part of Christmas with us,Christmas decorations made their way into our house. From the Nativity, that still goes up every year, to the mechanical Stantas that used to scare me as a child.

Things from her house just kept turning up at our house; usually the things there were the more kids geared decorations. Including the light up moose that was meant to stand out in the yard. It was only out in our yard one year and did not work very well while it was out there. His head was supposed to move. Except he got broken while being put up that year. We all still maintain that my dad and grandpa broke the moose on purpose.

The Christmas decoration that still stands out to me to this day is the one that never made it to our house. And that would be the Christmas Bat.

One year when I was about six or seven mom’s best friend’s son, the same one who didn’t pay attention to where he hid the six dozen Easter eggs, very excitedly pulled out his favorite childhood Christmas decoration. It was a light up Halloween bat that went in the window. That was flashed to look like it was flying when turned on.

I’ve been told that the Christmas bat was originally a Halloween bat that just never got put up until way after Christmas. However, when he was a child and asked about it he was told it was still up because it was a Christmas bat. Which led it to becoming the Christmas bat.

While I do know that the Christmas bat did not get put up that yearn or any other in my memory. I do clearly remember him pulling it out and telling us about how it was a Christmas decoration.
